Beginning with Moz
Together with his mother, Gillian, Fishkin co-founded Moz after dropping out of college. Ranking businesses had become the priority, giving way to a new industry: search engine optimization. As Google became the undisputed leader surpassing search engines like Yahoo and AltaVista, its powerful algorithms provided quick and accurate results.
After deeply analyzing the trends, Fishkin came up with a business idea to help enterprises top search engines from his hometown in Seattle. At its inception in 2004, he primarily focused on web design and hired contractors while learning PR and marketing traits from his mother's small business.
The Moz blog soon grew from an unknown blog into an SEO empire. Serving as Moz CEO for over seven years, he expanded the team from 7 to 135 employees and raised annual revenue from $800,000 to $30 million. His Whiteboard Friday video series became renowned worldwide as an essential online SEO tutorial. In 2014, he stepped down as CEO and retained the title 'Wizard of Moz' before eventually transitioning out.
Co-Founder of SparkToro
Founded alongside co-partner Casey Henry, SparkToro is an Audience Intelligence platform that gives businesses a deep understanding of which online channels, websites, podcasts, and social accounts their target customers follow.
Launched in April 2020, the platform rapidly acquired over 12,000 free users and 160 paying subscribers. SparkToro also created a popular fake-follower calculator powered by machine learning algorithms to separate fake social media accounts from real ones, backing its launch with $1.8 million in funding.
